This is last novel by famous writer whose works were made into sucessfull gangster movies, and as such is a love letter to bygone era of 1920's prohibition and depression. Novel starts when in opening chapter a woman's dead body is discovered when she came out of the river;a cop's wife. After some investigating police finds clues about unsucessfull gangster killing, and police forces are sent out on crackdown on brothels controlled by mafia. Lot of interesting things happens later on, but motive for killing cop's wife is thrown away for some exciting mob developments which is truly authentic, of course W. R. Burnett knew those times and those people. All in all, interesting read for lovers of crime fiction.
